I was reading an artist's blog a few weeks ago, in which she describes her adventures on the Artist's Way programme. For the life of me, I can't figure out where it came from... but there it was, nestled in my bookshelf. A tattered copy of The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron.

The idea is that all of us have an inner artist that is begging to be freed. So far, so good. Cameron has been teaching this enormously successful programme for aeons, with results reportedly nothing short of outstanding. She recommends practices like “morning pages” – 3 pages of stream-of-consciousness freewriting every day upon awakening, and “time travel”, a cathartic exercise in which you go back in your past and identify your old creativity-slayers. I'm seeing those notebooks filling up preeetty quickly with stories about my poor old music teacher.

I wonder if blogging has a similar effect to the morning pages. And I wonder if the “artist date” (in which you take your inner artist out for fun – ie. spend some alone time doing things you really enjoy) would really apply to me, because I think I get enough alone time as it is. Hm.

Updates forthcoming.
