AN EXPERIMENT

I think, by this point, we all know I'm just a little bit whack. And I think I've already made clear that I'm addicted to self-help and how-to books. So I'll go right ahead and tell you which ones I'm working on this week.

Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz (The Original Self-Help Book); Mars And Venus On A Date (Men Are From Mars..., for singletons - please no hate mail); and Instant Self-Hypnosis: How To Hypnotize Yourself With Your Eyes Open, by Forbes Robbins Blair.

I've started on Mars And Venus and Self-Hypnosis. Surprisingly, Mars And Venus has been quite an eye-opener thus far. Some very interesting points that had never occurred to me (I am socially retarded, but still.). If anyone's read it or any other books in the series, I'd love to hear your opinion on it.

On the other hand, Self-Hypnosis is... well, different. The book contains scripts for a wide variety of hypnotherapy sessions (from "Stop Teeth Grinding" to "Total Self Confidence"). The idea is that you read your chosen script aloud, in a soft, soothing voice, and (as the title states) hypnotize yourself with your eyes open.

I admit I tried out the "You're Getting Sleepy" script last night. And it did work at first in that I did, in fact, get very sleepy. But I started creeping myself out, reading aloud in a hypnotherapist-ish voice in my dimmed bedroom. Alone, at 2 in the morning. I'm an insomniac, not a psychopath.

Regardless, I am intrigued by the concept of hypnotherapy. It just makes sense that your mind will be more receptive to suggestions when you are relaxed. And it also makes sense that the mind is a multifaceted thingamabob, with each small portion influencing the whole. And obviously, your mind influences your actions. If that made any sense at all.

I think I can train myself to get through these scripts without cracking myself up, with some practice. I've decided to log my experiment data here. Observations forthcoming.

P.S. In other news, I made my first ever batch of caramels today. They were divine. I might try to post pictures tomorrow, if there are any left...
